Niche Site Marketing (building niche sites and selling products related to that niche) is an easy way to start your work from home business. You can use your own knowledge of a niche topic to create content for your site and recommend products and services to visitors who are interested.

The secret to this work from home strategy is that you need to repeat the process to create multiple streams of income.

The biggest stumbling block for many wanting to create an online presence is creating a website. By far the most cost effective way to do this is to do it yourself but the mere thought of creating a website is enough to stop some in their tracks.

Are You Stuck Trying to Build Your First Website?

I know when I first started building niche websites it was a mammoth task. I began by building html sites from scratch but I don’t recommend this if you are a total newbie like I was. It is a steep learning curve!

It is time consuming too. Once you have created all your pages and uploaded them, you have to test every one to make sure all your html code, links and images are working. It was hard labour even though it was a labour of love.

Then I discovered WordPress. Up until then my only experience with WordPress was the free hosted blogs I had created at WordPress.com. So why would I want to use a “blog” when I wanted to create a “static” site.

WordPress is the world’s leading blogging platform and is much more than blog software. It’s a user friendly web authoring tool that is continually being updated and improved upon by the very people who use it.

By far the easiest and quickest way to get your first website installed is to use WordPress.

If you want a static site no problem… use the page function
If you want to blog about your day at work, no problem… use the post function
Heck you can use both!

Most web-hosts that offer cPanel will have Fantasico (or something similar) which will allow you to install WordPress at a click of a button. Talk to your Web Hosting Support to see if you they have this feature or choose a web host like Hostgator.

What is a WordPress Theme?

The theme is the look and feel of your site, how it appears. This includes the layout, header graphics, text style and colour, background, width, sidebar, footer, navigation, link appearance, how images behave…. and the list goes on.

WordPress comes with a number of standard ‘themes’ when installed that anyone can use in the design of their site, and there are a large number of WordPress themes in the Free Themes Directory at WordPress.org created by others you can use too.

Why is a Theme Important?

How your site appears is the first impression you make on your visitors. If the appearance is themed towards the subject matter of your site there will be congruency between how your site appears and it’s content which makes it more attractive to your visitors.

There are lots of beautiful looking free WordPress themes available but they may not suit your needs. Depending on the topic of your site you may not find a theme that complements it. Or you may find a theme that fits perfectly but lacks some functionality that you want.

An issue I have with some free WordPress themes are the attribution links in the footer. I think it is fair to give the theme author credit for their work and will leave the [no-follow] links there so long as they are linking to ‘appropriate’ sites. However I have tested themes that don’t and they are coded in such a way that you can’t remove them so I leave these themes alone.

My favourite free WordPress themes are those that include customisable features – things I can change myself without too much hassle. However most of the free themes out there are not created with the Niche Marketer in mind.

To save time being wasted on looking for and modifying themes to suit each niche site I looked for a premium theme that could be easily and quickly set up for any niche.

I have always tried to use the free option but the thing with free is that it will cost you time – time to customise and time to learn how to customise. This is time better spent on marketing and earning money.

I finally found the premium WordPress theme I was looking for, one geared toward online marketers and niche bloggers.

The Socrates WordPress Theme from Joel Comm.

The Socrates WordPress Theme is the easiest way to create niche WordPress site fast and can be set up in minutes.

If you want to see how easy it is, watch the 10 minute demo video which includes the time to install WordPress to your site.

Socrates is easy to use and has lots of functionality that you can turn on or off depending on your needs. The reason I went with Socrates is that customising is just a matter of making a few choices to make my site unique. You are actually viewing a Socrates site now.

Some of the features of Socrates that I like are:

Multiple Layout Design
I have the ability to choose left sidebar, right sidebar (150px or 300px wide) or split (both at 150px)
I can include rotating banners and a social slider with links to my RSS Feed, FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkdIn profiles

Fully Customizable Navigation
I have a choice of four navigation areas. Top Navigation, above the header; Primary Navigation, within the header area; Left Footer Navigation and Right Footer Navigation.

Multiple Theme Design
I can choose from Preset Colour Themes, modify them or design one from scratch to set the colour of my fonts, headings and links. There are 50+ backgrounds to choose from or I can upload my own.

The Custom Header Design System
This comes with 220+ Niche Header Graphics plus I can instantly insert my own and brand my site with my own Custom Title and Description (Tag-Line)

Multiple Page Templates.
I can use different templates depending on the purpose of the page such as a contact page, sales page or even a squeeze page to capture those important subscribers.

Built in Monetization
I can add banner ads quickly and easily by just copy and pasting code into the designated ad blocks. This is great for Google Adsence, ClickBank, Amazon or any Ad network.

Free Tutorials and Training
Because the Socrates Theme is made by a marketer for marketers you even get some free Internet Marketing lessons as well as video tutorials on WordPress and how to set up your Socrates site.

How Affordable is Socrates.

This is a big question in anyone’s mind when looking at purchasing a WordPress theme. I know I weighed it up quite seriously before I bought it. I weighed up the time I had to spend looking for a theme that suits my niche, then the time I spent customising it; and I had to repeat this process every time I started a new one. Weight that against buying one theme for each site and a onetime purchase of a theme I can use over and over again – Socrates in my humble opinion is worth the Unlimited Use License fee.

Plus you can try it for free by signing up for a 7 Day Trial (no Credit card required)

Do I Recommend Socrates WordPress Theme? YES! In fact I am in the process of updating all my niche sites to the Socrates Theme – it’s that good.

If you want to check it out for yourself just click on any of the Socrates banners you see on this site.

I have never been good at setting goals. That’s not strictly true… I am good at setting them – I understand the principles involved – I’m just not that great at achieving them.

I have read books about goal setting, covered them in workshops, and know about making them SMART; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

I even go into great lengths in formulating them, scheduling them into my day planner, writing them up and posting them all over the house. But no matter how much I do this I still don’t seem to be able to reach them by the appointed hour or even tick them off as accomplished.

So it is with this history that I approach the task of goal setting for 2011 with a little dread.

I know goals are important. They create momentum allowing us to see where you are going and how far you have come. However for me they are a double edged sword – a source of great joy or a sense of grim failure.

For many years I used to think that it was just me – that I was somehow lacking – and this is why my goal setting efforts came to naught.

Then I read something that made me go uh-huh! Maybe I had been looking at goals the wrong way? Granted, it is the generally accepted view but perhaps I need to look at the thing differently?

It was nothing much really – just someone else’s blog post about not wasting time with goals in 2011. The premise behind the idea is that many goals we may set for ourselves, especially regarding online business, is beyond our control.

Goals vs Objects of Desire

What if it is not about the goal? What if the problem is about commitment?

When you think about it goals can be beyond our control. For instance if I was to make some goals about what I want most in life

Working from home full time.

Totally debt free.

Independently wealthy.

Living on and managing a farm stay.

Are these goals possible or realistic?

They are dreams for sure and my gut goes squishy every time I think about them but they are more like objects of desire than “Goals”. Goals are the steps of achievement that bring you closer to your object of desire.

So I have identified some Objects of Desire, how do I set the path to achieve them?

Identifying the Goal Path to the Object of Your Desire

The backwards planning method is a great way to break down large goals (objects of desire) into smaller steps (goals). Just start at the end and think of the step just before it and keep doing this until you have identified your first step.

Take one of my objects of desire from above

Desire: Work from home

Goal: Replace my work for pay income

**Rinse & Repeat previous steps

Step 15: Sell lots of product

Step 14: Get traffic

Step 13: Get no. 1 on Google

Step 12: Build back-links

Step 11: Search engine optimise webpages

Step 10: Create own product

Step 9: Sell “X” affiliate products

Step 8: Get traffic

Step 7: Get no. 1 on Google

Step 6: Build back-links

Step 5: Search engine optimize webpages

Step 4: Build a site

Step 3: Create content

Step 2: Select a niche

Step 1: Research a topic

Goal Setting Vs Commitment

A lot of what we set for ourselves as online business goals is beyond our control…

#1 on Google – at Google’s discretion

Visitors to website… at the visitor’s discretion

Sell products… again at the visitor’s discretion

A Commitment has a direct relationship to a goal but must be something I have control over. So what can I commit to do each day to achieve these goals? What is within my control?

Write a blog post

Write an article and submit it to an article directory

Create back links to my site

Search engine optimize webpages

A good way to look at it is for every goal/step, identify what commitments you need to make to achieve it. If after a while what you are committed to doing is not achieving the goal, commit to do something else towards the goal. You haven’t failed to reach your goal, you have just refocused your energies toward achieving it.

So why not commit to identifying your object of desire, the goals to realize it, the commitments to achieve them and commit do at least one thing every day to grow your online work from home business.

There is something about the New Year Season that makes one retrospective & introspective – right? There are parties to go to and resolutions to be made. We celebrate the turning of another year and breathe a sigh of relief that we have survived to start anew with fresh hope for the future.

It is my belief that you can’t look or move forward until you have looked back. Besides who wants to make the same mistakes again?

So I thought I would review the year that was 2010 and contemplate what that year brought me and my family ( in no particular order)

Looking Back: What I learned in 2010…

For starters I learned yet again that

“watching someone you love die of cancer has long term psychological effects. “

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma just before Xmas 2008 and was given less than a year to live.

I have watched my step-mother die of Bowel cancer and my Dad die of throat cancer so watching my mother-in-law fade away was an awful reminder but I had to stay strong for my husband and children.

As predicted Brenda died late in 2009 and my hubby found beginning 2010 hard – he struggled with his grief over losing his mum and his job. This brings me to the second thing I learned during 2010…

“Sometimes when your worse fears are realised you actually survive and come through it! “

In the middle of 2009 Hubby was made redundant from his well paid middle management position due to the down-turn in the building industry. I was working for just over minimum wage and come 2010 we nearly lost the house.

At least being unemployed gave him extra time with his mum; not only to say goodbye but also to nurse her at home.

He did eventually get some temporary work over the busy 2009/2010 Christmas season and finally got a permanent position in April working for the local Hospital board but at a much lower position & income.

Thankfully his share of his inheritance paid off the mortgage arrears and credit cards/accounts so we are now debt free – apart from the mortgage.

Looking back I can now appreciate that the fear of being destitute is so much greater than the reality. Our family lived through it. Our credit rating is in the toilet but we no longer live on credit – the mortgage and bills are paid each month and the family are fed.

When you hit rock bottom there is really no other way to go but up.

These experiences lead to a greater desire to not be beholden to anyone whether it is income or debt. As I see it, the only way to become recession proof is to become successful at earning money online and working from home.

The 3rd thing I learned in 2010 was

“I am Stonger Than I Thought”

A 7.1 Earthquake that shook our city of Christchurch in the early hours of September 4th.

It was quite an experience to ride out the 40 second shake on our bed while watching the wall hung TV tip and praying our quake-proofing worked.

We were one of the lucky ones… a few broken dishes and a toppled aquarium but our home was intact with no see-able damage. We went without power, phone and OMG! Internet for a few hours but all in all survived unscathed.

Being prepared with our camping gear, med-kits and calm demeanour helped immensely. The kids took their cue from us, and although the after-shocks still get the heart racing, we all take it all in our stride.

The 4th thing I learned in 2010 is that it pays to

“Stop being a martyr and take action!”

I was not happy in my job. It wasn’t the work I hated – in fact I loved it. It was the mind numbing, head banging, going nowhere, what’s the pc word for it… “Human Resource” issues that nearly drove me to commit murder or seppuku.

In despair and desperation I made a decision to resign. It was a scary step considering what we had been through but my health and happiness were at stake.

The day I handed in my resignation notice I applied for a job online. The very next day I got a phone call from the recruitment agency saying that the applications were closed but as they hadn’t found anyone as suitable as me they were going to put me forward as a candidate.

Several phone calls, interviews, and forms later, I got a phone call at work on the last day of my formal notice period. I had a new job starting Monday!

I am much happier with my new job which has better wages, better conditions and is not retail!

I am thankful I had the courage to walk away and trust there was something better waiting for me. It is not my ultimate goal but is a stepping stone away from despair and toward hope for the future.

Looking Forward in 2011

For my family 2011 marks the last year at Intermediate School (Junior High) for our youngest daughter and our eldest daughter has decided to start her Fine Arts degree – finally! She took a ‘gap’ year or two after finishing high school, and it’s nice to know that her artistic talents aren’t going to be wasted.

Hubby is investigating ways to increase his minimum wage income by both looking for another management position and working on his WW2 Model Airplane Kits blog (his first foray into blogging and the internet marketing world.)

As for me…

Firstly, I am focusing on improving my health and well-being by getting my Fat Burning Furnace stoked up; shredding some much unwanted pounds, increasing my energy and vitality levels. I also want to quit smoking so I’m going to be a barrel of laughs to be around. (You can read about my efforts by following the links to my blogs.)

Secondly, and most importantly, growing my work from home business.

I will endeavour to be more consistent on building my online income from the current trickle that it has been to the torrent I want it to become; and let you know what works and what doesn’t.

As a person that labours over my writing (and yes, it can be painful to watch), I will be focusing on using Write or Die daily to write for at least 15 mins a day. Chances are that a lot of it won’t make it to this blog but rest assured the choice cuts will be served here. http://writeordie.com/

Putting into Practice what I have learned will play a major role in this. While learning how to make money online is important, the only way to make money online is to do it!

To quote a well known marketer…

“Perfection in the LOWEST standard of achievement… DOING is the HIGHEST!” –Andy Jenkins

What I took away from this is I need to firmly adhere to the Nike philosophy – JUST DO IT!

While the above is not a list of New Year’s Resolutions per se, they are the areas where I want to improve upon during the coming year.

So keep your eyes and ears peeled – you will be hearing a lot more from me in 2011.

Mass Money Makers launched on the 28th December and it seems to like that everyone is on board. Just today I got another email in my inbox from someone I don’t know promoting it.

I am sure that you’ll receive tons of emails about it too, but I got a sneak peek at the product, and want to give you my review.

So, what is Mass Money Makers?

It’s based on a simple concept that works (and works well from what I’ve seen)…this concept is what allows us to rank on 1st page of Google within two to three weeks for just about any keyword you want to put out there…

…then we take those same rankings and get them to build massive (really massive) lists…which in turn are piped through “mass money funnels” and the end result is money.

Simple, yet very powerful. Indeed it is, and that’s why they’ve simplified it into four core videos that are 2 to 3 hours each, where they break down everything in minute detail.

Can you get any better then that?

So in the end, I vote for Mass Money Makers. It’s a great product, that really works.

If you’ve been looking for a way to make money online, then you really need to get in on it before the launch is completed.

When they first opened the doors, they said the software would be limited. I just got an update from them and as of now they only have a few spots left!

I highly recommend that you get your hands on this software right now!

GO to the Mass Money Maker site NOW!

While not quite hot off the presses… I did come across this pre-launch for Anik Singal’s Empire Formula yesterday (it was released about 10 days ago).

The first video I saw was number 2 in the four part series about building an online empire entitiled

“Building Your Empire in Your Underwear!” – 36:45mins.

The Title of this video made me laugh because that describes exactly what it is like sometimes… getting up in the morning, sending hubby to work and the kids to school, then jumping on the computer while still in your nightie…. The next thing you know the kids are home and you are still in your nightie cooking dinner! (sound familiar… or is that just me LOL)

Cute title and revealing anecdote aside, what Anik reveals about having a business, creating a product and networking the right way is invaluable.

The networking method most used (particularly within the MLM business from my personal experience) immediately puts people off – myself included. Anik gives some great tips on how to network the right way by warming up your contacts first instead of pouncing on them like a stalking tiger.

The main purpose of the video is to share with us a tried and tested Product Creation Formula that is easy and fast – 10 days fast.

“Income vs Value Business” – 14:22mins

The first video in the series (and the one I watched second) looks into defining whether you want to build an income business or a value business – don’t know what that is? Identifying which business model you are using will help you focus on the ‘right’ stuff for your business. Anik explains it very well in “Income vs Value Business”

There are two more free training videos to be released before Empire Formula Launch Day and Anik has a free eBook “The Empire Formula” – 159 pages of must read information if you are considering starting your own work from home empire.

You just got to see for yourself at www.wfh4l.com/empire-formula.html and if you spread the word you can win some awesome prizes too.

The Thirty Day Challenge (as the Challenge was called in its formative years) began in August 1995 by three internet marketers: Ed Dale, Dan Raine and Robert Sommerville (a.k.a. GuruBob). It started as a fun challenge for Internet marketers to prove to the world that anyone could earn ten dollars online in just thirty days.

What Is the Thirty Day Challenge?

Basically research a suitable micro-niche, set up a blog, monetise it with affiliate ads, drive traffic to it, and see if anyone buys anything – within 30 days.

The “Thirty Day Challenge” (or “ 30 Day Challenge” or “30DC”) was so popular that it became an annual event held every August for newbie internet marketers with the target being reduced to just one dollar.

Why was the goal post lowered so dramatically?

“It’s not about the money… it’s all about the ‘process’…” – Ed Dale

Fast Forward to 2010 and the Thirty Day Challenge (www.thirtydaychallenge.com) underwent a transformation to become www.challenge.co, a publicly floated company.

With this came a change to the duration of the challenge as well. It has progressed from a 30 Day Challenge to 8 weeks/modules (one pre-challenge module and seven challenge modules) with a week break in between each module to “catch up”. So all in all, during ‘Challenge Season’, 15 weeks total.

How Did I Become Involved?

I was first introduced to the 30 Day Challenge in 2007. I can’t quite remember how it came about but I do remember I started the 30DC a little late into the July “pre-season” (a few days before kick-off on 01 August 2007) and haven’t looked back since.

I had been marketing for a while on the internet and although hadn’t quite found my ‘niche’ or the business model I wanted to focus on, I had learned quite a bit of this and that.

I found what was taught during the 30 Day Challenge complemented what I was attempting to establish (a good refresher exercise) and a great way to be in contact with other would internet marketers.

Internet Marketing/Online Marketing can be a lonely existence. Usually your family, friends, and work colleagues don’t understand what you are doing or even why.

I created a “Challenge Blog” where I journal my experiences and lessons starting in 2007 and I still use it for the Challenge to this day. You can check it out here: http://wfh4l.com/30-day-challenge

An Online Community of Internet Marketers

The great thing about the “Challenge” is the community in which it operates. It comes from a highly ethical, ecological and community minded ethos which makes being a part of the community a pleasure (No Forum Trolls Allowed).

There are times when the Forum Rules seem a bit puritanical, and the moderators are quick to jump on anyone not complying, but in the general scheme of things, everything is to the benefit of all.

Setting up small teams as a support system is highly encouraged.

Multimedia Drip-fed Lessons

The lessons are made up of daily videos (a total of 13 hours plus) which can be viewed online, downloaded to view on your computer or iPhone. You can even subscribe via iTunes.

Following the video lessons are transcripts which can be easily scanned to pick up anything you may have missed (also available through an iTunes subscription).

Each day there is an introductory video from Ed Dale followed by one or two “lesson” videos with an action list for you to complete that day. These are presented by different folk with the appropriate expertise to the task at hand.

Also included are the occasional webinair or online TV Show where the participants can have their questions answered live.

How Relevant is the Challenge Material?

The Challenge Team does a great job of keeping the lessons and content fresh, well focused, and up to date with the ever changing online environment (thanks to the “Labs”). Each year they introduce the most current tools and strategies to the process of researching a market, setting up a blog, and testing market responsiveness to spending money on what they want or need.

How do You Complete the Challenge?

The challenge is to earn your first dollar online from scratch and as a general rule most people who follow the process will achieve this whether through Adsence clicks or an affiliate product sale.

Even if a niche doesn’t pan out there is an option to sell your site, to recover your setup costs at the very least, or for a profit and perhaps give you a little start up cash for your next project.

The real value of the Challenge is learning the philosophy and methodology to start an ethical online business.

How Much Does it Cost to Do the Challenge.

The Challenge lessons and lesson materials are all absolutely 100% free and it is touted as the best free Internet Marketing training available on the web.

This being said, there is a sometimes a misconception that no money is required to set up an online business. It’s a nice dream but the reality is, there are some costs involved.

Registering a domain name (about US$10/yr) and webhosting (about US$10/mth) for your blog is the bare minimum and you could be looking at an investment of US$130 a year as a start up cost. If you only use your webhosting for the challenge period of 16 weeks this reduces to US$50! Not free but definitely do-able.

Once you have established your niche business you can add to that a good Auto-responder service such as Aweber (about US$19/mth) but this is not a requirement of the Challenge.

The Challenge Partners and Service Providers

In order to leverage the time it takes to do some of the tasks, the Challenge has partnered with other service providers – which of course does come with a cost, though not during the Challenge.

Other online business tools and services such as

WordPress Direct – Website installation and management service

Traffic Bug – Back-linking and site registration service

Noble Samurai – the producer of Market Samurai, the niche research tool of the century (I’m a little biased – I just love it and the NS team)

…remove some of the drudgery and technical expertise required to set up a profitable website.

During “challenge season” these are offered with a free trial and it is up to you to continue using these tools and services as a paid member or owner as in the case of Market Samurai with a special discount for challenge participants. You can check out the services by clicking on the links above.

If it is Free, How Does ‘The Challenge’ Make Any Money?

Although the Challenge is Free for participants to do, there is a huge cost involved in running the program – top web-hosting to handle the mega amount of band-width consumed (terra-bytes of it). So it is no secrets that if participants “up-grade” from the free trials of any of the products and services used, the Challenge do receive an affiliate commission.

What would you prefer? To pay an entry price of what it’s truly worth to do the challenge or a piece of the price you pay for a tool/service you may or may not buy. I know what I prefer.

Is the Challenge Worth It?

Definitely – YES!

Whether you have never done internet /niche marketing before or if you are an old hand… everyone benefits from committing a few dollars and 30-60mins a day building an online business.

The “Challenge Season” is over as I write this but you can still access all the lessons now, until the next challenge begins next year in August 2011.

So why not start your very own work from home challenge now.

When you’re contemplating working from home, there are a number of decisions that must definitely be reached.

To begin with, you need to make your mind up whether working from home fits your needs. Then, you’ll want to think about what sort of work from home activity you will end up working on. There are plenty of possibilities designed for work from home moms available, online as well as off-line.

Developing a profitable work from home business begins with assessing your own personal capabilities together with the requirements of an occupation and then simply choosing the best match.

Often the best position to begin your decision process is the place where your ‘away from home’ occupation concluded.

Lots of women discover they can develop into independent contractors within the area in which they formerly worked so well in. You can make use of your own former job expertise to be a launching pad for your personal ‘work from home mom’ business.

A few of the approaches to make use of your own working experience to your benefit can be:

locating a organization which employs individuals within your particular field to work,

utilizing your former expertise in becoming an professional article writer within your industry

or perhaps establishing a small business based on your earlier line of business.
